Ancient Greek · A place to begin

Learn Ancient Greek. Read your first original.

Begin with the alphabet, build a working vocabulary and learn to notice how words fit together. AKRO connects that practice to the reason you started: reading Ancient Greek itself.

A real place to start

Meet Heracles in the original

Our browser lesson follows Heracles and Cerberus in Apollodorus, Bibliotheca II.5.12. It starts with names, familiar roots and the action of the sentence. Explore the passage before committing to a full course.

01

Start with letters and sounds

Greek has 24 letters. Learn their shapes in words rather than treating the alphabet as a separate test to pass. In classical texts you will also meet accents and breathing marks; learn to recognise them as you practise reading.

02

Give endings a job

Greek nouns change for case and number; verbs change for person, tense and other features. Work with short examples so that an ending tells you something about the sentence, rather than becoming another isolated form to memorise.

03

Return to a short passage

Read once for the general scene, then investigate unfamiliar words. Revisit the same passage after studying its vocabulary and grammar. AKRO brings lessons, exercises and reading tools together to support that cycle.

A route from study to reading

Use lessons for a structured introduction, vocabulary cards for review and the reader for original texts. Where a text includes audio or a translation, use them to check your understanding and return to the Greek. The available support varies by text.

Is Ancient Greek the same as Modern Greek?

They share a long history and an alphabet, but grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation have changed. AKRO’s Ancient Greek material is intended for reading older texts; it is not a Modern Greek conversation course.

Do I need to know Greek before trying the lesson?

The Heracles lesson guides you through a short passage using names and context. It offers a first experience of reading; sustained study will still require vocabulary and grammar practice.
