Latin · Words become a story

Learn Latin, one passage at a time.

A familiar alphabet is a useful starting point. The next step is learning to see what Latin endings do — and using them to understand a sentence, not just recite a table.

A real place to start

Read with a Roman historian

The first-reading lesson uses a passage from Eutropius, Breviarium I.8. Names, recognisable roots and repeated forms become clues. Follow the guided discoveries, then bring the sentence together in a translation.

01

Recognise words in context

Some Latin roots will look familiar from English or a Romance language. Treat that familiarity as a clue, then check the word in its sentence: a related modern word does not always preserve the ancient meaning.

02

Notice the endings

Noun endings help show a word’s role; verb endings help identify who does what. Latin word order is flexible, so practise using forms and context together rather than reading every sentence as if it were English.

03

Read, review, return

Start with a short passage. Review useful vocabulary and grammar, then read it again. In AKRO, lessons, exercises, vocabulary cards and the library support different parts of that routine.

Study with the original in view

The AKRO reader keeps the text close to dictionary support and available translations. Choose a manageable passage, investigate a few forms and reread it. Audio and commentary are available for supported texts; their availability depends on the work.

Can a beginner try the Latin lesson?

Yes. The browser lesson guides your attention through a short original passage. It is an introduction to the reading process, not a claim that one lesson replaces a Latin course.

Can I combine the app with a class?

Use the app to revisit vocabulary and practise reading between classes. AKRO also offers live Latin courses for learners who want a teacher and a regular group schedule.
