Three levels — find yours

Which group is yours?

Read the short description and the sample text. If the sample makes sense without a dictionary, you are ready for that group. Not sure? Ask the teacher — we reply within a day.

Beginner

No prior knowledge required: we start with the alphabet.

Beginner group textbook – Primus Annus (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1912) by W. L. Paine and C. L. Mainwaring.

The main focus is speaking practice and developing the ability to understand a text directly. Grammar is learned progressively and systematically; combining the lessons with the interactive app lets you practise and firmly consolidate the material.

Lessons last up to 1.5 hours. Working languages: Latin and English.

Check yourself
Nunc insulam monstro. Corsica est insula, Britannia quoque insula est. Britannia magna, Corsica parva insula est. Insulane est Italia?

– You recognise familiar place names, but can you bring them together into one meaning? This is the group for you.

Continuing

We recommend completing Primus Annus.

Continuing group textbook – Decem fabulae (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1912) by W. L. Paine and C. L. Mainwaring: a collection of comedies with adapted syntax and engaging scenes for a lively experience of the language.

Assumed: comfortable reading, basic vocabulary and the foundations of Latin grammar (1st and 2nd declensions, indicativus, imperativus, infinitivus praesentis activi; pronoun declension; parts of speech).

The focus is on expanding vocabulary and engaging intuitively with the text. Grammar is introduced structurally and in targeted fashion.

Lessons last up to 1.5 hours. Working languages: Latin and Russian.

Check yourself
Euge, Publi! Bonum consilium invenisti! Tu, Luci, i ad matrem; illi de morbo meo aliquid narra!

Self-check: if the general meaning is clear, but you want to consolidate your grasp of the forms and "feel" the irony, this is the group for you.

Advanced

Reference points: Familia Romana, Primus Annus or Ora Maritima.

Advanced group textbook – Puer Romanus (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1913) by R. B. Appleton and W. H. S. Jones: the final step on the way to reading unadapted Latin authors.

Assumed: completion of a basic Latin course, including grammar and vocabulary.

The focus is on syntax, enriching vocabulary and rhetoric.

Lesson structure:

  1. Practising the vocabulary of the previous lesson
  2. Reading and analysing the new lesson together
  3. Lexical and syntactic exercises

Lessons last up to 1.5 hours. Working languages: Latin, with minimal use of Russian.

Check yourself
Imperator Poenus in terra Sicilia bello Carthaginiensi primo contra Romanos pugnans locos idoneos prior occupat.

Self-check: if the words and forms are familiar, and you want to learn to use them fluently, this is your group.

How the course works

A language that starts to sound from the first lesson.

01

We read and speak

Direct method: the working language in class is Latin or Ancient Greek. You understand the text directly, without word-for-word translation.

02

Grammar from the text

Rules appear when you need them to understand, and are consolidated straight away in reading. No memorising tables for their own sake.

03

Practice between lessons

The words and forms from class are in the AKRO app: flashcards, exercises and texts, so everything settles before the next meeting.

What is included

Everything you need to read to the end.

01

20 live lessons

Two meetings a week: up to 90 minutes of reading, practice and your questions each time.

02

A small group

From 8 to 15 people: everyone reads aloud and speaks in every lesson.

03

Recordings and materials

Missed a class? Watch the recording. Your group space stays open for three months after the course.

04

One month of the app subscription with VERITAS

With VERITAS, your first month of the AKRO app subscription is free. If you choose automatic renewal, you will be charged monthly from the second month. The course is paid for separately, with your promo code discount.

What did you enjoy most?

Feedback from Ancient Greek course participants. Translated from Russian.

I really loved the vibe in class! It’s a calm, friendly atmosphere. We revisit previous lessons through questions and answers, you can peek at the grammar materials, and you’re still doing great :)) The lessons themselves are built around real conversation: we join the story of an Ancient Greek boy, Thrasymachus, and it’s as if we’re exploring this strange world alongside him... I especially want to thank Roman for the theatrical flair with which he helps us work out the meanings of new words! Once you figure one out, you won’t forget it))

Lyubov Lyoga

What I enjoyed most was the complete immersion from the very first minutes — straight into the thick of it. No long, boring theory (though all the essential foundations are there, of course): we started reading in the very first lesson, answering questions in the second, and asking our own in the third. That intensive pace and constant practice — “read, read, read” — help you get into the right mindset straight away.

I also want to mention the people. Those who find their way to studying Ancient Greek are truly interesting. Talking with them is a pleasure, and everyone has something to teach you. A huge thank you to the organisers for the idea, the programme and the wonderful atmosphere!

Questions & answers

Can I start from zero?

Yes. Beginner groups start with the alphabet; no preparation is needed. Check the language of explanations: in the beginner Latin group explanations are in English, in the other groups in Russian or English.

How do I know my level?

Read the description and the sample text in the Levels section. If the sample makes sense without a dictionary, you are ready for that group. If in doubt, send the teacher a question through the form — we reply within a day.

What if I miss a lesson?

Every lesson is recorded. Recordings and materials stay available in your group space for three months after the last lesson, so you will not miss anything.

How do two payments work?

The first payment secures your seat and the price of the whole course. The second is due 30 calendar days after your group starts. We send a personal link: no automatic charge and no extra cost.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Request a full refund before the second upcoming group lesson after your first successful payment — we refund what you paid and cancel any remaining payments. This guarantee is in addition to your statutory rights. Write to info@akro-greek.com.

What if the group does not fill up?

A group needs at least eight students to start, and takes at most fifteen. If the group does not fill, you choose a full refund or another confirmed group. A transfer happens only with your consent.

Which time zone is the schedule in?

Groups meet on European time (Madrid). The page also shows the times in your own time zone. Europe changes the clocks on 25 October — see the exact time of every lesson in the group calendar.

Do I need an AKRO account to pay?

No. If you already have an account, use its email. After payment we send instructions; new students set a password through the link in the email.
