75. Augment and reduplication in compounds
- In prepositional compounds, the simple form is augmented and reduplicated:
εἰσ‑άγω, εἰσ‑ῆγον, εἰσ‑ῆχα. ἐκ‑στρατεύω, ἐξ‑εστράτευον, ἐξ‑εστράτευκα.
- Before the augment (or augment‑like reduplication):
- prepositions ending in a consonant resume their original form, if it has been changed in the present tense;
- prepositions ending in a vowel (except περί and πρό) drop it.
Examples:
ἐμβάλλω throw into, impf. ἐν‑έβαλλον, συλλέγω gather, impf. συν‑έλεγον, συστέλλω draw together, impf. συν‑έστελλον, ἀποβάλλω throw away, impf. ἀπ‑έβαλλον, ἐπιβάλλω throw upon, impf. ἐπ‑έβαλλον, παραβάλλω throw beside, impf. παρ‑έβαλλον,
but:
περιβάλλω throw around, impf. περι‑έβαλλον, περιρρέω flow around, impf. περι‑έρρεον, προβάλλω throw before, impf. προύβαλλον (or προ‑έβαλλον, 18, 2).
- Such denominative verbs as are derived from nominal compounds have the augment and the reduplication at the beginning:
ἀδικέω do wrong → ἠδίκησα, ἠδίκηκα (from ἄδικος), ἀθυμέω lack courage → ἠθύμησα, ἠθύμηκα (from ἄθυμος), δυστυχέω am unhappy → ἐδυστύχησα, δεδυστύχηκα (fr. δυστυχής), εὐτυχέω am happy → ηὐτύχησα, ηὐτύχηκα (fr. εὐτυχής).
